Born: Grand Centre, AB — September 26, 1952 • Drafted: 1972 • Islanders: 1972–1982
Gary Howatt was one of the toughest and most feared fighters of the 1970s NHL, known as "Howie" to teammates. A key part of the Islanders' early identity as a physical team, he was on the 1980 and 1981 championship rosters and spent a decade protecting the Islanders' skill players. His role shifted as the team evolved, but he was part of the foundation that made the dynasty possible.
