Born: St. Boniface, MB — October 22, 1949 • Islanders: 1980–1985

Butch Goring may be the most important trade deadline acquisition in NHL history. Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on March 10, 1980, the clean-cut center wearing his signature white Jofa helmet gave the Islanders the checking center they needed to complete their championship puzzle. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1981 as playoff MVP. A fierce competitor and natural leader, Goring later became head coach of the Islanders. He wore #91 as an homage to his prior team.
